Aquatic model for lake Kallavesi enhancing environmental assessment of waters

The project parners and their cooperation entities have identified that the environmentaly sustainable investement by the companies and management of environmental effects require to develop modeling for the target area namely lake Kallavesi. The goal of the project is to develop the usability of modeling of waters from the viewpoint of environmental impact assessment for different branches of industry like mining and forest industry, water supply as well as agriculture and forestry. The project aims at applying the existing modeling solution in boreal conditions taking into account local conditions like species, ecosystem structure and seasonal effects due to ice cover. The goal of the project is to ensure good ecological condition and usability of the lake Kallavesi by providing tools for estimating the effects of water related measures as well as effect of climate change in advance.

The creation of the model for target area namely Kallavesi is done by carrying out several actions: firstly, the data needed for the modeling is gathered and validated, then, suitable modeling tools are selected and integrated (flow ja ecological modeling) followed by creation of models in co-operation with the companies. Finally, the resulted data and models are published.

All in all, the result of the project is a water model targeted to lake Kallavesi that can be used as a platform for modeling work by the local companies in anticipating the quality of the water in the future. The results of the project will be published after the project and are thus available for other entities in this field. Additionally, by communicating the project results to wider audience , the awareness and understanding of the factors affecting the lake Kallavsei will be widened.

The project enhances the competitiveness of the companies in the Northern-Savonia region, promotes sustainable growth, and strenghtens the their water management producing well-being to the area. The results of the project will have wide societal impact in whole Finland by enhancing the environmental impact assessment processes in general.
