The UEF Library is an academic library open to the public and its collections are also available to all library users.
The library acquires both electronic and print resources to its collections mainly in the disciplines researched and taught at the university. The collections hold research literature, course books, periodicals, academic theses, databases, reference books, electronic publications and selected open access resources.
Furthermore, the library has several special collections and it is one of the six legal deposit libraries in Finland and a European Documentation Centre.
Information on the acquired materials is entered in the library’s data systems. You can search for both print and electronic resources in the UEF Primo. However, as an exception to the general rule, materials in certain special collections cannot be searched in the UEF Primo.
More detailed information on the principles of shaping the collections can be found from the library’s collection programme.
Closer to the resources
On the net and campus
The electronic collections are comprised of both licensed and free electronic resources. The e-resources include databases, online journals, e-books, online dictionaries and reference books.
As per the agreements, the licensed electronic resources are available to all library users at the campus libraries. Furthermore, the students and staff members of the University of Eastern Finland and the staff members of Kuopio University Hospital can access the resources from other facilities within the university network as well as via a remote access connection outside the university network.
Some e-books are available only for the holders of the University of Eastern Finland's Haka credentials, i.e. UEF user ID and password.
You do not have to log in to access free electronic resources as they are openly available to all library users. See Guide for open publications searching.
Print collections can be found from the Joensuu and Kuopio Campus Libraries and from the Kuopio University Hospital (KUH) Medical Library. The collections emphasise the university’s key fields of research and teaching on each campus as follows:
- Pharmacy (Kuopio)
- Humanities (Joensuu)
- Education (Joensuu)
- Economics and business administration (Joensuu and Kuopio)
- Natural sciences (Joensuu and Kuopio)
- Medicine (Kuopio)
- Forest sciences (Joensuu)
- Psychology (Joensuu)
- Applied sciences and technologies (Kuopio)
- Theology (Joensuu)
- Health sciences (Kuopio)
- Social sciences (Joensuu and Kuopio)
The majority of print resources are shelved in open stacks and can be checked out from the library. Reading room copies can be borrowed overnight or for the weekend. Print materials can be sent from one campus library to another upon request, and they can also be sent as interlibrary loans to other libraries. Please see Borrowing services for more information.
The library has electronic and/or print copies of the course books which are included in the degree requirements. Whenever possible, the library acquires course books in the electronic form. As a rule, print course books are located in the campus library of the campus where the course is taught and the exams take place.
The library tries to acquire one lendable copy of each course book per five students enrolled for the course. The loan period of a lendable course book is 14 days.
Students have the possibility to reserve and borrow course books from another campus library. Reading rooms copies, however, cannot be requested from one campus library to another. Detailed information on the course books, e.g. their locations, call number and the number of copies available can be found in the UEF Primo.
The University of Eastern Finland Library subscribes to about 40,000 e-periodicals annually. Almost all electronic journals can be accessed remotely with the UEF credentials. Journals are subscribed to in electronic format whenever possible. Old volumes of about 4,000 titles can be found from the campus libraries in printed or microfilmed format. You cannot borrow printed journals, but the campus libraries have scanning and copying facilities. You can find journals and links to e-resources from UEF Primo.
