Studies
The Department of Chemistry offers high-quality programmes for chemists, subject teachers of chemistry, and class and subject teachers of chemistry. All Master’s degree studies have also been integrated into the our international Master’s degree programme. The combination of domestic and international education provides students with excellent capabilities for working in international environments.
Expertise in chemistry opens many doors for careers in industry, universities, research institutes and the public sector. The course offering and the honed, research-oriented education concept enable students to effectively advance their studies. Master’s theses and postgraduate studies are linked to the research groups’ projects, creating a strong connection with businesses and the world of work.
In addition to the international programmes taught in English, the department also offers degree programmes taught in Finnish. Please visit our Finnish-language website to learn more about them.

Research
The research carried out at the Department of Chemistry aims to address global questions related to environmental health, well-being, the safe and efficient production of energy, and materials that promote sustainable development. We are seeking new chemistry-based solutions and ways to enhance the value addition of products.
Our focus areas in research include applications in bioeconomy and biomedicine, functional materials in photonics, photocatalysis and energy applications, and polymerisation and environmental catalysts. We have a long tradition for example in allergy research and in the development of catalyst technology for vehicles.
Everything is based on solid, high-quality basic research, which generates knowledge that is applied and made available to businesses through national and international networks. Research is carried out by skilled and motivated staff in a cutting-edge research environment.
