This year, the University of Eastern Finland’s Master’s thesis award in photonics was presented to Martti Hanhisalo, Muhammad Muaz Iqbal and Onah Ebere Mercy.
The award is funded by a donation from Huawei Technologies (Finland). The award is presented in recognition of a notable Master’s thesis in the field of photonics, one that has made significant use of, or a significant contribution to, photonics. The award amounts to 2,000 euros, and a total of three awards are presented each year.
Photonics/optics is defined as a field of science and technology encompassing the physical phenomena and technologies associated with the generation, transmission, manipulation, detection, and utilisation of light. It covers the electromagnetic spectrum from ultraviolet (UV) light through visible light to infrared (IR) light.
Martti Hanhisalo’s thesis, Quantum uncertainty in double-slit vector-light interference, explored the uncertainty of quantum polarization in the famous double-slit experiment, covering several foundations of modern photonics and quantum physics.
Muhammad Muaz Iqbal’s thesis, Graphene enhanced dielectric metasurface: towards close to perfect absorption, designed, manufactured and characterised a graphene-like film enhanced with a 3D-printed dielectric metasurface. The main goal was to achieve near-perfect absorption at various angles of light incidence.
Onah Ebere Mercy’s thesis, Hybrid Active Polymer Nano-Waveguide, focused on designing and manufacturing a waveguide containing active material enabling excitation and collection.
“The thesis topics covered a broad spectrum of the theory, materials and components of photonics, which will also have significant practical applications in the future. These theses also provide a good foundation for further research, as well as for the students’ doctoral studies. The students did an excellent job both in terms of research and the written presentation of their results. Each of these Master’s theses was given the highest possible grade, 5/5,” Professor Jyrki Saarinen says.
