The University of Eastern Finland will introduce a continued right to study from next August onwards. In compliance with this study right, students graduating from the University of Eastern Finland can complete supplementary studies free of charge during two academic years following their graduation.
Students graduating on 1 August 2019 or later can activate the continued right to study after their graduation. It is possible to use this study right during the year of graduation and during the following two academic years.
The continued right to study right applies to students who have completed a Master’s degree, or a Bachelor’s degree with no right to complete a Master’s degree, at the University of Eastern Finland.
“The continued right to study makes it possible for students to supplement their studies by taking working life needs into consideration. For instance, if graduates notice that they are lacking a skill that is relevant to their career, they can supplement their studies via the continued right to study,” Academic Rector Harri Siiskonen notes.
The continued right to study makes it possible for graduates to pursue freely available minor subject studies or to complete minor subject studies for which they have received the right to study during their degree studies. More detailed information on possible restrictions on participation is available in the curricula. Graduates will receive an official transcript of academic record on the studies they have completed. International students graduating from a Master’s degree programme should be prepared to take care of matters relating to their residence permit prior to activating their continued right to study.
At the moment, graduates have the opportunity to complete supplementary studies until the end of the academic semester of their graduation. The opportunities of students graduating from August onwards to complete supplementary studies are now significantly improved.
“This reform also means that graduates can get their degree certificate as soon as they have completed all the required courses, and they no longer have to wait for the completion of any possible supplementary studies,” says Dean Sari Rissanen, who coordinates matters relating to continuous learning at UEF.
“I hope that employers, too, will seize this opportunity and support graduates’ competence development under this new status the continued right to study provides. In practice, the continued right to study is a good way to enhance dialogue between working life and education, and to gain feedback on the skills needed in changing professional roles,” Rissanen says.
The continued right to study is included in the new Study Regulations of the University of Eastern Finland, to enter into force on 1 August 2019.
