High-performance computing academy funding for neurodegenerative disease research

The research project of a Senior Researcher Maija Lahtela-Kakkonen at the UEF Department of Pharmacy has received significant funding from the Research Council of Finland for research into the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

The research project of Lahtela-Kakkonen, called “A dynamic view of protein complexes: A new approach for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases”, received funding of 442,819 euros in the High-performance computing 2024 call. The research is scheduled for years 2025–2027.

The research project examines protein complexes that are associated to neurodegenerative diseases using high performance computing. The aim is to explore the dynamic changes in complexes due to the inhibitors or stimulators of various proteins. The protein regulators can have major impact on protein dynamics which also effects on the protein complex. Study focus on protein phosphatase 2 (PP2A) and its regulator proteins, Prolyl oligopeptidase (PREP) and Midline1 (MID1).
