Anyone working in science will undoubtedly already have heard of the concept of open science, but it bears repeating: In addition to being a collection of research methods and recommendations, open science refers to the entire process of change within scientific culture. The concept of open science covers the public availability of research publications, materials and methods; the utilisation of open peer reviews, open source code and open standards; the openness of research processes and operating methods; the distinguishing of researchers through open science; and open education. Even though open science can be characterised as an ongoing process of change, the openness has always been a part of responsible science: Transparency and openness are core scientific values.
