Studies
Basic degree studies in dentistry take 5.5 years (330 ECTS credits) and lead to a Licentiate degree in dentistry. From the onset, the studies emphasise the role of the dental health care system and dentists as part of holistic health care. The graduates will work as experts of the masticatory system, oral health promotion, disease prevention, diagnostics, and care, who also direct patients to other health care professionals as needed.
The education includes both the preclinical and clinical stages. During the first two years the emphasis of the preclinical stage is on basic knowledge, skills and proficiencies consisting mainly of theoretical medical studies. In the clinical stage from the third year onward, clinical work is learnt in a simulation environment. After that, students move on to the clinical stage working in the Teaching clinic under specialists.
After completing their fifth year, students have a compulsory six month practical placement at a health centre before graduating.
Research
Teaching at the Institute of Dentistry is based on high-quality research. Our aim is to build international-level research by recruiting top talent as the institute’s researchers and teachers and educating our own students in research.
The Kuopio Institute of Dentistry is part of FINDOS, the Finnish National Doctoral Research Programme. The FINDOS network includes all dental schools (Helsinki, Kuopio, Turku and Oulu) in Finland. FINDOS arranges national educational research seminars and seminar days, which the network’s doctoral students can use in the theoretical part of the PhD studies.
The aim of the institute’s high-quality research is to discover the underlying mechanisms of oral diseases, develop their prevention and treatment, and promptly give access to new research data in the health care system.
