CURE2021 research grant for epilepsy research at A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences

Professor Asla Pitkänen has been awarded a $250,000 grant by the US-based CURE Epilepsy association for research aimed at preventing the development of epilepsy after brain injury. Brain injury is one of the most common causes of structural epilepsy, estimated to account for 5-10% of all cases of epilepsy.

“This highly competitive grant is a significant recognition of our research. The main objective of our research is to prevent molecular level changes occurring in the brain tissue after brain injury, which can lead to the development of epilepsy.”

“Lately, we’ve had plenty of good news relating to research funding secured by members of the Neuroscience Research Community of the University of Eastern Finland, which probably is a good indicator of how well our research strategy works,” the Research Community's Deputy Director Pitkänen says.
