What is the topic of your doctoral research, Lingwei Huang?
In my doctoral study, concurrent changes in articular cartilage, subchondral bone and their interface are examined in a rabbit model of early osteoarthritis. Understanding early osteoarthritis helps to develop better diagnostic methods and therapies.
What are the key findings or observations of your doctoral research?
In my doctoral study, site-specific and progressive degeneration of subchondral bone has been observed in the rabbit knees with osteoarthritis, while cartilage degrades progressively in femoral condyles but in other locations cartilage degeneration is followed by partial recovery. Besides, upregulated metabolism and inflammation has also been observed in articular cartilage in early osteoarthritis. These findings provide a relatively comprehensive understanding of multi-tissue and -scale variations in joints with early OA.
How can the results of your doctoral research be utilised in practice?
The early-osteoarthritis-related findings in the doctoral study cue to clinical diagnosis and treatment of this disease at very early stages.
What are the key research methods and materials used in your doctoral research?
In my doctoral study, osteochondral samples are collected from rabbit knees with post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Micro-computed tomography is used for structural analysis of subchondral bone and calcified cartilage of collected samples.
