Doctoral defence of Taufiqurrohman, M.Hum, 26.9.2024: New and valuable method for studying mobility in English mystical literatures and poetry

The doctoral dissertation in the field of English Language and Culture will be examined at the Philosophical Faculty.

What is the topic of your doctoral research? Why is it important to study the topic?

Mystical mobility in Anglophone poetry, with the case of the contemporary poetry of the US Sufi (Islamic mystic) poet Daniel Abdal-Hayy Moore. There is a lack of research concerning the topic so that my research is vital in providing a new way to study literary texts by linking mobility with mysticism. The key finding is about textual mobility; the study reveals how Moore's poetry shows the process of mobility through its mystical Sufi representations that makes it unique in the context of Anglophone mystical literature.

What are the key findings or observations of your doctoral research?

In comparison to related Anglophone mystical texts, Moore's poetry shows processes of transformation and mobility in its mystical representations. In addition, the poetry also reveals a particular narrative of the mobility of the poet. Such textual mobility and narrative of mobility suggest that Moore's text plays a particular role in Anglophone mystical literature.

As evidenced in my dissertation, the study of such a link of mysticism and mobility in literary studies is hitherto lacking. Since my study has provided a new way to discuss their relatedness and generated novel finding, my study therefore provides a new and valuable method for studying mobility in English literatures and poetry in particular.

How can the results of your doctoral research be utilised in practice?

The results of my study can be used in academic contexts.

What are the key research methods and materials used in your doctoral research?

The suitable materials of my research consists of four collections of Moore's Sufi poetry, and they are studied by using the method of cultural analysis, since several systems - i.e. Sufism, Zen Buddhism, postcoloniality, travel, and globality - are involved in the texts within the frame of plural intertextualities.

Is there something else about your doctoral dissertation you would like to share in the press release?

My study provides rich findings because it involves analysis of both ideational and corporeal mobility. Besides, the interweaving of both forms of mobility within the context of the poet's mystical mobility results in a new understanding of analysis of the mobility of the text and the narrative of mobility in the text with particular reference to Sufi mysticism.
