Eight Finnish universities open their doctoral courses to students from partner universities

Finnish universities are intensifying their collaboration in doctoral education. A selection of doctoral courses available to doctoral researchers from the participating partner universities has been published on the doctoralcourses.fi website today.

“The need for closer national collaboration in doctoral education has been great since the Academy of Finland’s funding for graduate schools ended. Through the partner network, doctoral programmes in different fields can open their courses to doctoral researchers from other universities,” says Academic Rector Tapio Määttä of the University of Eastern Finland, under whose lead the reform has been prepared by the Finnish Doctoral Education Network.

Courses are offered by Aalto University, the University of Eastern Finland, the University of Jyväskylä, the University of Lapland, LUT University, the University of Oulu, Tampere University and Åbo Akademi University. The partner network, and the agreement on educational cooperation between them, are coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland.

“The doctoral courses available through this partner network will not affect the function of any existing networks currently operating in different fields, but rather enables them to enhance their activities. I hope that in the future we can get all Finnish universities to join this network and make their doctoral courses available to doctoral researchers from other universities,” Määttä says.

The doctoral courses available via the network are open to all doctoral researchers who have a doctoral study right in one of the partner universities. In the spring semester 2023, the partner universities offer a total of 39 doctoral courses in different fields. The selection includes discipline-specific courses as well as courses related to research methodology. Courses are offered in Finnish, Swedish and English, and registration for courses is university-specific. Students are free to choose one or more courses according to their interest. Most courses can be attended remotely or online.
