New project develops AI based brain stimulation for the treatment of depression

The Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation has granted a funding of 300 000 euros to Academy Researcher Dogu Baran Aydogan of the University of Eastern Finland. Funded from the Future Makers programme, the aim of the project is to develop an AI-based transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment for depression.

The project introduces an innovative approach by integrating AI with the diagnostic capabilities of magnetic resonances imaging (MRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) while planning the TMS treatment for depression. The combination of therapeutics and diagnostics, which is also known as  theranostics, makes it possible to customise the treatment according to each patient’s individual needs.

Aydogan aims to develop and bring the new technology to clinical trial-ready stage by the end of the three-year project. The interdisciplinary project leverages cutting-edge infrastructure and brings together national and international experts, including university researchers from the University of Eastern Finland and Aalto University and medical professionals from Helsinki University Hospital. It also builds bridges with companies like Bittium Biosignals Ltd.

“The aim of the project is not only to improve patient outcomes but also to advance our understanding of the human brain by developing new medical technologies and exploring their potential for widespread use,” Aydogan says.

Aydogan is the leader of the Computational NeuroImaging Research Group at the A. I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences (http://cnir.net).

Through the Future Makers programme, the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation funds ambitious research openings with novel ideas to create internationally unique knowledge for the benefit of the Finnish industry and renewal of the society at large.
