Tiina Laatikainen, Professor at the University of Eastern Finland and Department Director at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, has been appointed to a high-level advisory group of the World Health Organization (WHO), contributing to the global promotion of research and innovation related to non-communicable diseases. The advisory group’s role is, among other things, to support the WHO in its strategy on reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases, to anticipate challenges, and to recommend priorities and practices.
A total of 12 experts from around the world were appointed to the WHO Technical Advisory Group of Experts on NCD Research and Innovation (TAG-NCD-R & I). The appointment is for two years.
With the advisory group’s expertise, research and innovation activities will be targeted to support the objectives of the WHO’s action plan for the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases 2013–2030. The objectives include a one-third reduction in the number of deaths caused by non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, and diabetes.
