Elina Hytönen-Ng, PhD - a researcher at the Karelian Institute and a Docent in ethnomusicology - together with the Kyynelkanavat (Tear Ducts) working group, has received a three-year project funding of 399,100 euros from the Kone Foundation.
Three artist-researcher duos ask what needs laments fulfill in today’s world. The project approaches the lamenting tradition from the viewpoint of the body, religiosity, community, and emotions. The researchers’ work partners are musicians specializing in the lament tradition – Emilia Kallonen, Liisa Matveinen and Emmi Kuittinen. The project researchers study laments through different research fields. Viliina Silvonen (University of Helsinki) - a folklore researcher, and Riikka Patrikainen (UEF, School of Theology & School of Humanities) - a researcher in Orthodox church music and culture, also work in the project. Apart from research, the project will produce events for the public: open seminars, public-participation workshops, and artistic performances.
