The University of Eastern Finland’s Communicator of the Year Awards were announced in an award ceremony today. A winner was selected from each of the university’s faculties, and the 2024 Communicator of the Year Awards were presented to the MoLeWe Research Collective, to Professor Markku Hauta-Kasari, Senior University Lecturer Lasse Heikkinen and University Lecturer Ville Nivalainen in recognition of their communication and marketing of the university’s education in technology, to Professor Tomi Voutilainen from the UEF Law School, and to the Cancer Research Community, CANCER RC.
The Communicator of the Year Award is presented in recognition of an outstanding attitude towards, or efforts in, communication and marketing during the past year. The award is not tied to any professional title: the most important thing is a genuine interest in communication. The primary criterion is that the person or the group has understood the significance of communication and is determined to raise awareness of the university’s activities by means of communication.
The Communicator of the Year Award of the Philosophical Faculty was presented to the Motivation, Learning and Well-being Research Collective, MoLeWe. Over the past year, the MoLeWe collective has been very active in communicating its new research, with the collective members having an extremely positive attitude towards requests from the media. The collective encourages its early-career researchers to make communication an automatic part of their research process, and all members of the collective support and assist one another with communication-related matters. The collective is led by Professor Markku Niemivirta.
At the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, the Communicator of the Year Award was presented, in recognition of communication and marketing of the faculty’s education in technology, to 1st Vice Dean, Professor Markku Hauta-Kasari, Deputy Head of the Department of Technical Physics, Senior University Lecturer Lasse Heikkinen, and University Lecturer Ville Nivalainen. The launch of a new degree programme and all communication related to it require diverse skills – in this case, facts with a twist of student humour. The people involved in the programme’s communication have boldly put themselves out there, keeping a steady eye on the future of the education.
The Communicator of the Year Award of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies was presented to Professor Tomi Voutilainen, who is one of the university’s most visible researchers in the media. He has provided journalists with diverse commentary on societal phenomena from the perspective of his own field of research, and has successfully explained legal issues, even complex ones, to the public.
The Communicator of the Year Award of the Faculty of Health Sciences was presented to CANCER RC in recognition of the research community’s active and diverse communication of its research findings and research activities. Thanks to their consistent communication efforts, several research groups within CANCER RC have contributed to the university’s visibility while also raising awareness of cancer research among the public.
Congratulations to all!
