The Board of the University of Eastern Finland approved the university’s plan of operations and budget for 2022 in a meeting held on 14 December. The university’s financial situation is stable. The budget has been prepared so that the revenues and expenses are in balance, and the goal in 2022 is to achieve a zero-profit result.

The university’s strategy, UEF 2030 – Seizing a Sustainable Future, is implemented through continuously updated strategic programmes. These programmes serve as the university’s plan of operations, guiding the concrete progress of the strategy and the allocation of strategic funding. As strategic measures, for example, the development of research infrastructures, and strategic recruitment, will be invested in by 1.5 million euros each.

The university’s overall funding will increase from the level of the 2021 budget by 13.3 million euros. In particular, the level of external funding will increase from the previous year, but there is also a slight increase in government funding, and in returns on investments. The growth in the university’s funding is explained, for example, by the new Flagships of research the university is involved in, and by increases in student intake numbers.

The university is also running a fund-raising campaign until the end of June 2022. Funds received as donations will be transferred to reserves and they will become available for use after the campaign has ended. The Finnish government will match the private capital raised during the campaign by a sum that is 2.5 times higher than the private capital raised.
