Peirong Chen is a student from China who is pursuing a Master's Degree in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (ELEIC) at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). She shares her story of why she chose UEF, what she likes about her studies and Finland, and what are her plans for the future.
Why did you decide to apply to UEF?
I decided to apply to the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) because I was eager to enrich my knowledge and professionally grow after working as a high school teacher in China for seven years. During my search for suitable programmes, I found that the ELEIC program at UEF stood out for several reasons.
First and foremost, the ELEIC program at UEF appealed to me because it specifically emphasizes the balance between theory and practice. This balance aligns perfectly with my desire to gain both theoretical insights and practical skills in my chosen field of study.
Furthermore, UEF's reputation for providing high-class education was a significant factor in my decision to apply. I am confident that the university's commitment to excellence will attract a diverse and talented pool of applicants from all over the world. This diversity excites me because it means there will be numerous opportunities for me to work with international peers, engage in collaborative projects, and conduct research interviews. My horizons will be expanded by such a setting, which will also offer me a rich and exciting learning opportunity.
What has been your favorite thing in your studies so far?
One of my favorite aspects of my studies at the UEF has been the practical component of the programme. Specifically, the two teaching practices I had at a local primary school have been incredibly enriching. These opportunities allowed me to co-teach with my classmates and apply the knowledge and theories I've gained in the classroom to real educational settings in Finland. It's been truly rewarding to witness the immediate impact of my studies on my teaching and communication skills.
What has been the best or the most memorable moment in Finland or at UEF so far?
The most memorable moment for me during my time in Finland has to be the day I went to the Polar Bear Sauna with my Finnish flatmate. It was an experience that I had never imagined having before coming to Finland. Prior to this adventure, I had never gone swimming outdoors in the winter, let alone in a frozen river. At first, the idea of dipping myself into the icy water seemed crazy, but I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, it turned out to be an incredible experience that I will never forget. What made this moment even more special was sharing it with my Finnish flatmate, who guided me through this traditional Finnish activity. It was a bonding experience that allowed me to connect with the local culture on a deeper level. This adventure taught me that sometimes the most memorable moments in life come from stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something entirely new. It's an experience that has left an indelible mark on my time in Finland and will remain an unforgettable memory in my life.
In your opinion, what is the best thing about Finland and Joensuu?
In my opinion, the best thing about Finland and Joensuu is the incredible summer experience. Spending a summer in Finland has been a truly remarkable and unique experience for me.
The highlight of the Finnish summer is undoubtedly the phenomenon of the midnight sun during midsummer. It's absolutely amazing to have extended daylight hours where the sun never seems to set completely. This phenomenon allows me to enjoy the beauty of the Finnish landscape all day and night, creating a magical atmosphere that's unlike anything I've ever experienced.
During the Finnish summer, the entire country seems to come to life. Everywhere you go, you'll find lush greenery, pristine lakes, and vibrant flora. It's a time when nature is at its most beautiful, and I don't need to go far to enjoy it. Just lying on the grass and gazing at the endless sky can make me feel like the happiest person in the world. And it's easy to understand why Finns are often regarded as some of the happiest people in the world. The simplicity of enjoying nature and the outdoors, along with the warm and welcoming Finnish culture, contributes to this sense of happiness and well-being.
