The University of Eastern Finland passed the EC’s HR Excellence in Research Award renewal assessment in November 2023, continuing the university’s right to use the HR Excellence in Research icon.
The university is committed to observing the European Commission’s principles for the strategic development of the status of researchers and research careers (Human Resources Strategy for Researchers, HRS4R). The university’s development of research careers has been persistent and ongoing for over a decade, and it was first recognised with the HR Excellence in Research Award in 2014.
The development of the status of researchers and research careers addresses the areas of fair and transparent recruitment practices, working conditions, career development, and ethicality and professionalism. Concrete development objectives, timetables and persons in charge are determined for each area. The university’s progress is evaluated regularly through internal reviews and by external assessors.
“Our university places importance on providing a working environment that supports academic work, as well as on fair and transparent procedures for recruitment and research assessment. These assessments help us to see the progress of our development work and they give us feedback and information on our policies in relation to other European universities,” says Ulla Hurskainen, Director of Human Resources and Staff Well-being at the University of Eastern Finland.
