There is a growing need for English-language education in Finland – already now, the Open University at UEF offers 100 courses taught in English.
The number of courses taught in English at the Open University of the University of Eastern Finland has grown significantly and will be increased further.
The growing need for openly available education offered in English is explained by internationalisation, immigration and the war in Ukraine. Finland is home to an increasing number of people who have received their school education in some other language than Finnish or Swedish. Several Open Universities across the country are supporting people fleeing the war in Ukraine by offering courses taught in English.
The need for Open University education offered in English has also been recognised by the Open University of the University of Eastern Finland, which currently offers 100 courses in English. Courses taught in English can be completed in, e.g., educational science, business studies, social sciences and health sciences.
“For Finnish-speakers, too, courses offered in English are an excellent opportunity to enhance working life skills not only through professional development, but also through improved language skills,” says Tero Karjalainen, Director of the Centre for Continuous Learning at the University of Eastern Finland.
Open University education is well suited for personal competence development. All Open University courses also constitute part of an academic degree, and credits completed in the Open University are transferable. The mode of teaching on Open University courses is blended, allowing their completion in a variety of different life situations. For example, online courses taught in English can be completed from anywhere in the world.
