The EBU Alliance was established in 2019 by Europe's leading universities engaged in bioeconomy research and education. At the EBU 5-year anniversary event held in Brussels on 19 November 2024, the University of Eastern Finland accepted took over the presidency of the alliance of eight universities for a two-year term.
“Chairing the Alliance of European Bioeconomy Universities is an interesting opportunity for us to steer our joint research and education to a higher quality and impact,” says the Academic Rector Tapio Määttä.
Currently, the EBU member universities are implementing the FOEBE+ educational project, which focuses on bioeconomy entrepreneurship skills, and the DESTINY project, which offers joint doctoral degrees on innovative biomass production systems. As part of its Presidency mission, the University of Eastern Finland will organise the European Bioeconomy Scientific Forum in Joensuu in June 2025.
“During the Presidency, we will deepen the global research cooperation between bioeconomy universities, use research-based information to influence the updating of the European Bioeconomy Strategy, and offer young people opportunities to influence the future of the bioeconomy,” says professor Teppo Hujala, Speaker of the EBU Presidency Chair at the UEF School of Forest Sciences.
