The course provides an overview of long-term developments in world history from the seventeenth century to today, primarily paying attention to political, economic, social and cultural changes. Given the dominant position of Europe in world history during a large part of the period dealt with, there is a certain focus on European developments, yet crucial changes will be put in a global perspective through comparisons with other parts of the world.
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- identify long-term developments from the seventeenth century until today;
- assess how developments in different fields of the society went hand in hand and/or contradicted each other;
- analyse the process of modernisation critically;
- interpret current global trends through their long-term historical roots and take them no longer for granted.
In the course, political, economic, social, ideological and cultural lines of development and turning points from the early modern period until today will be studied. Given the dominant position of Europe in world history during a large part of the period dealt with, there is a certain focus on European developments, yet crucial changes will be put in a global perspective through comparisons with other parts of the world.
Modes of Study
The course consists of lectures with an active participation of the students (40h), independent reading (22h), writing an assignment (16h), and independent study (57h). All the lectures are recorded and the recordings are made available through Moodle.
The course is evaluated on the basis of an examination in the EXAM-system (75%), in combination with an assignment on a topic given by the lecturer (25%). Students have the opportunity to submit a first version of their assignment, to receive feedback, and to improve their assignment on the basis of this feedback when submitting their final version.
The course will be offered for students in major and minor, students of continuous learning and also for students from the UEF Open University.
The study fee is 20 euros per ECTS credit for individual study units, and 15 euros per credit for study modules. The study fee is paid at registration.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.
