This course is part of the YUFE Skills of the Future Programme.
The course covers the following topics:
- Introduction to the concepts of adult education and sustainable development.
- Adult education, education policy and sustainable development.
- Work and family, towards a sustainable working life.
- Leisure time and non-formal learning.
- Media and new technologies as enablers and threat to sustainable development.
Learning outcomes
Students will:
- Be familiar with the concept of adult education and sustainable development within a social cultural context.
- Be able to discuss and compare sustainable development within Finnish adult education policy.
- Be familiar with how work/life balance connects to sustainable development and how to encourage it.
- Be familiar with the connection between non-formal learning and social cultural sustainable development.
- Be familiar with how the development of new technologies can enable or disrupt sustainable development.

This course is a part of the basic studies Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development that also offer an open university route to a Bachelor Degree Programme of the same name at the University of Eastern Finland. Read more here.
Study methods: Learning tasks in the online course environment 21 h, essay 30 h, independent work 111 h. Learning tasks must be completed by 30.11.2024 in the autumn semester, and by 9.5.2025 in the spring semester.

The study fee is 20 euros per ECTS credit for individual study units, and 15 euros per credit for study modules. The study fee is paid at registration.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.
