Introduction to the main concepts of the course
- Theoretical Traditions in Sociology of Education
- The Meaning of Education
- Sustainability Education in Finland
Learning outcomes
After the course student:
- has knowledge of basic research frameworks and concepts of social scientific research and the sociology of education
- knows the societal functions of education, and can reflect on individual and social meanings of education knows the central theoretical traditions in the social sciences of education
- has progressed in critical thinking skills.
The course is a 5 cp MOOC course open for anyone on the DigiCampus learning platform. Course can be taken by students from any discipline, the course does not require previous background with educational studies.

This course is a part of the basic studies Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development that also offer an open university route to a Bachelor Degree Programme of the same name at the University of Eastern Finland. Read more here.
Online course: learning tasks 20 h, learning diary 30 h, individual work 85 h.

More information about the learning tasks can be found on the course Digicampus Moodle platform which will open on August 15th. Learning tasks must be completed by 30.11.2024 in the autumn semester, and by 12.05.2025 in the spring semester.
The study fee is 20 euros per ECTS credit for individual study units, and 15 euros per credit for study modules. The study fee is paid at registration.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.
The course is available from September to December and from February to May.
