Content:
The course will strengthen and widen the understanding of several central topics in global health, including, for example, the following:
Health in social context
Maternal and child health as cornerstones of healthier future
The growing global burden of non-communicable diseases
The volatile and unpredictable infectious diseases
Learning outcomes
Along the course, students should:
get an updated picture of major contemporary public health issues in the global context;
understand the way shared global and unique local challenges of health are connected across the world;
examine the UN Sustainable Development Goals from the public health perspective;
appreciate the role of historical, cultural and social factors in shaping population health across the world;
discuss the ethical aspects global health issues;
achieve an idea of the importance of international and global collaboration in reducing disease burden and promoting health
Prerequisites:
Understanding of the basics of public health (completed course: Foundations of Public Health course code: 4455907, or equivalent).

Study Methods
All teaching is internet-based studying (online course) using Moodle as the learning platform (135 active working hours = 5 ECTS).
Evaluation
This study unit is graded on a scale of 0-5.
You can study this course 7.10.-7.12.2024. Registration is open 5.8.-30.9.2024.
This course is a part of advanced studies in Public Health.
Please make sure you have sufficient skills (Understanding of the basics of public health such as completed course: Foundations of Public Health course code: 4455907, or equivalent. Also there is required pre-reading to be announced prior to the course) and understanding of English language.
Web-based learning using Moodle as the learning platform includes independent readings, online lectures and notes, other online material, discussion forums, quizzes, essay assignment.
Successful completion of the course requires independent studying as well as active online participation (Participation in all discussion forums is compulsory); online discussion groups are central part of learning.
Reading material will be provided partly prior and partly during the course.
Literature acquisition costs / borrowing fees are not included.
Study units cost 20 e / credit. This price holds for the academic year 2024–2025.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.
