Course contents: Key concepts of education (education, teaching, pedagogics, counselling, lifelong learning, human development and growth, enlightenment). Formal and nonformal education, informal learning, learning spaces. Key characteristics, focus areas and research topics in educational sciences. Main methods and methodological grounds of human scientific (scientific research; qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approach).

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course, the student

  • Knows the conceptual basis of education and lifelong learning,
  • Understands the structure of formal education systems, different types of nonformal education, and the role of informal learning and different types of learning spaces in the society and in individual lives
  • Recognizes different research fields of educational sciences,
  • Is familiar with the key research approaches and methodologies in educational sciences

This course is a part of the basic studies Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development that also offer an open university route to a Bachelor Degree Programme of the same name at the University of Eastern Finland. Read more here.

Study methods: lectures (also available online and as recordings) 8 h; online exam based on lectures 2 h; online exam based on book 2 h, independent work 123 h.

Lectures are held in the Autumn period (you can participate in Joensuu or online and the lectures will also be available later as recordings). Online exams are available in December, March, and May. Essays can be submitted all year but must be submitted latest in May.

This course is a part of the Basic studies in Lifelong Learning and Sustainable Development. You may register for each course individually or by purchasing a study right for the whole basic studies module for the academic year 2024-2025. The price for individual courses is 20 €/ECTS credit and the price for the whole study module is 375€ (15€/ECTS credit point). This registration option for the whole study module is available until 25.10.2024.

The study fee is 20 euros per ECTS credit for individual study units, and 15 euros per credit for study modules. The study fee is paid at registration.

By paying the study fee, the student receives a temporary right to study that entitles them to attend a particular course. The right to study is course-specific, and is required to complete the course as specified in the syllabus for the term, covering both teaching and course exams. If the course is continuously open for registration, the maximum time to complete the course is from 1 August to 31 July for that academic year.

If you do not have a UEF username, you will also get instructions for activating one. Access rights will be added to your username when your study right begins.
