The UEF research assessment in 2023 evaluates the research performance of research communities (RCs) in the years 2019–2022.
The University of Eastern Finland has recognized 14 strategically important research communities, whose research is international, at high scientific level, and produces interdisciplinary scientific information and solutions to global challenges identified in the UEF strategy.
Evaluation report has been published and is available online.
The research communities, RCs, were formed by researchers and the university’s Rector decided on RC status to 14 research communities in 2020. More than 80 percent of the university's research and teaching staff are involved in research communities.

Evaluation
The evaluation is based on self-evaluation reports, compiled by the research communities, and an interview of the research communities by the external review panel.
The panelists evaluate the following aspects of the RCs:
A. Research excellence and scientific quality
B. Research environment and operational conditions
C. Impact beyond academia
D. Strategic visions and implementation
The RCs compile a 30-page self-evaluation report, and a bibliometric analysis will be done of the RC’s PIs. The RCs describe in the self-evaluation report the following:
A. Research excellence and scientific quality
B. Research environment and operational conditions
B1. Research personnel and multidisciplinary activities at UEF
B2. Resources and facilities
B3. National and international academic collaboration
C. Impact beyond academia
D. Strategic visions and implementation
Review panel
The evaluation of the RCs will be performed by an external review panel. The evaluation panel consists of academic, experienced, international members.
