The course covers the objectives of EU energy law, the constitutional and institutional foundations of regulating energy in the EU, the application of Treaty law to the energy sector and the sector-specific legal framework for energy in the EU.

The student will
- understand the interplay between different objectives of EU energy law
- understand the dynamics of the process towards an internal EU energy market and various forces affecting both the legal and policy choices
- identify and recognize the relevant primary and secondary norms of EU energy law
- know what kinds of tasks an energy lawyer is likely to have in practice
- research topics of EU energy law independently
- analyze sources of EU energy law and compose a legal paper with legal argumentation and reasoning
Modes of study:
The course consists of 20 hours of lectures, which include traditional lectures, case studies as well as small group assignments to train for the kinds of tasks an EU energy lawyer might have when practicing law. In addition, the course consists of approximately 115 hours of independent work during which the student will complete essay assignments. The instructions on how to complete the essay assignments will be given during the first lecture.
The course has mandatory attendance and cannot be completed without attending at least 80% of the lectures.
Teaching methods: On-campus contact teaching
Prerequisites It is strongly recommended that the student knows the foundations of EU law before attending this course. For example, 5311104 The Foundations of European Union Law (in Finnish), 5311105 Public EU Law (in English) or an equivalent knowledge would be sufficient to meet the prerequisites of this course.
