Via learning different sociological theories of society, they are able to understand the relevance of structural factors and cultural mechanisms that form social life and individual agencies, and thus to also reflect everyday life through sociological lenses.

Content

The course provides insight on sociology as discipline: its historical development, zeitgeist analysis, and topical fields. The course introduces basic concepts, classics, and theoretical approaches to understand social structures at different levels of social life. Sociological research that shows how “sociality” shapes social relations and individuals’ understanding on themselves and each other is also introduced.

This web course is designed to introduce the students to the causes and other underlying factors that contribute to the diminished capacities of a population subgroup, thus making it vulnerable. The course aims to illuminate the specific needs of these groups from health care and societal point of view. Specifically, students are expected to learn approaches and interventions that are relevant for public health.

General:

-Introduction to vulnerable groups: Based on cultural, political and social context of any given society, specifically vulnerable groups can include elderly, disabled, women, orphans, street children, refugees, religious minorities, HIV-infected, substance abusers, unemployed etc.

-Identifying the causes and risk factors: Physical vs. social vulnerability, socio-economic limitations, personal limitations, ethnicity, religion, gender, political situation etc.

-Dimensions of vulnerability: Social determinants of health, socially patterned disparities, social discrimination, social networks and social support, public health issues associated with vulnerability, temporary versus permanent vulnerabilities.

- Ethical issues: Basic human rights and social justice, access to health care, health equality, special consideration for specific needs in health care, priorities in policy making and research.

Community-based rehabilitation:

-General: Socioeconomic rehabilitation; health promotion and education, addressing long-term wellbeing, the role of local and international actors (organizations) involved.

- Public health for elderly: Subject-specific theoretical part, identifying specific causes for vulnerability, functionality, interventions and rehabilitation.

- Public health for disabled: Subject specific theoretical part, identifying the causes for vulnerability, understanding the mechanisms of interventions and rehabilitation process

Students should be able to:

- understand the principles of cultural and social segregation or discrimination that underline severe inequalities in contemporary societies

- study the factors that make certain groups more vulnerable to various hazards such as poor health, disabilities, risk of early death etc.

- evaluate the short term and long term needs of vulnerable populations

- learn strategies and best practices to get vulnerable groups empowered and thus alleviate disproportional risks

This course will be conducted completely online.

  • reflect on key social concepts (e.g., class relations, rationalization, globalization, diversity, consumer culture, capitalism, patriarchy, intersectionality etc.)

Content

The course provides an overview on the major theories of social science by explicating the key concepts of these theories. The relationship between society and individual, and how these become manifest in each other are also emphasized. A major aim in the course is equipping students with the social science terminology and a critical perspective established upon social scientific thinking.

This course is a part of the Basic Studies in Social Sciences.

Learning outcomes

During this course, students:

  • will get familiar with how society and individual relate to each other through the key social theories from the field
  • will gain insights into different mechanisms, patterns, and dynamics of society
  • will become familiar with the key themes in social sciences
  • will improve their skills on critical thinking

After this course, students can:

  • reflect on how societies operate
  • reflect more deeply on the relationship between society and individual
  • reflect on key social concepts (e.g., class relations, rationalization, globalization, diversity, consumer culture, capitalism, patriarchy, intersectionality etc.)

Content

The course provides an overview on the major theories of social science by explicating the key concepts of these theories. The relationship between society and individual, and how these become manifest in each other are also emphasized. A major aim in the course is equipping students with the social science terminology and a critical perspective established upon social scientific thinking.

After this course, students can:

  • reflect on what constitutes society and how societies operate
  • reflect on the relationship between society and individual
  • explain what ‘society’, ‘individual’, ‘modern society’, ‘societal change’ and ‘social inequality’ mean in social sciences

Content

The course provides an overview on what constitutes society and takes a look at the relationship of individual and society. A major aim in the course is equipping students with the lens of social science that magnifies social relations and patterns of organization in the examinations of society.
