A new Erasmus Mundus Design Measures project to develop a Joint Master’s Programme in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering

The MENU4MEPBIO project aims to strengthen the capacity of partner organisations to offer new and innovative transnational education and training in the fields of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, thus answering the growing need for highly skilled professionals in healthcare, industry and academia.

The project is implemented by a consortium of five leading higher education institutions in Europe: University of Eastern Finland (Finland), University of Zaragoza (Spain), Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania), Lund University (Sweden) and University College Dublin (Ireland). With the University of Eastern Finland (Department of Technical Physics) as project coordinator, the partners will co-design and develop a fully integrated and sustainable Joint Master’s study programme in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at a European scale, which cannot be accomplished by a single university alone. This joint effort will allow future students to benefit from the collective expertise of several different partners. This project aims to positively impact the partner higher education institutions (HEIs), students, associated industrial partners, hospitals and the wider academic community in the fields of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.

“I am excited to lead this project and collaborate with our partners. Each of them brings valuable and complementary expertise in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering education and training. The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) has a long history of teaching and research in these fields at the Master's level since 2008. The unique expertise that UEF brings to the study tracks includes the application of biomechanical and mechanobiological principles for therapy guidance (e.g., for Parkinson's and musculoskeletal diseases), disease monitoring (e.g., sleep disorders), and medical physics education (UEF also offers an international Master's degree programme in Medical Physics). Graduates of this interdisciplinary European Joint Master's programme will be well-equipped for careers in medical physics and biomedical engineering, whether they choose to work in healthcare, industry, or further continue in academia with doctoral studies. The MENU4MEPBIO project’s total funding is 60,000 euros, and the duration is 15 months.

The Erasmus Mundus Design Measures are projects meant to support higher education institutions (HEIs) that are not yet ready to offer a full Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters but wish to engage in joint programmes and explore the opportunities offered by the European Approach for Quality Assurance of Joint Programmes. Additionally, they may involve other educational and/or non-educational partners with specific expertise and interest in the area of study.
