EU funding for an interdisciplinary postdoctoral programme in brain health

The Neuroscience Research Community at the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) has secured more than 2 M€ of EU funding for the interdisciplinary NOVEL Postdoctoral Programme seeking solutions to brain health challenges. NOVEL integrates neuroscience, data science, innovation management, and social and legal studies across three UEF faculties.

Using a merit-based selection process, a total of 14 postdoctoral scientists will be recruited to the three-year, international programme. NOVEL was granted MSCA COFUND funding from the Horizon Europe programme, intended for the promotion of research training and researcher mobility. The project is coordinated by Professor Tarja Malm at A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, with Professor Päivi Eriksson of the UEF Business School acting as the Deputy Coordinator. The total budget of the project is approximately 4 M€.

Research to be conducted within the NOVEL Postdoctoral Programme is focused on four synergetic research areas: Prevention and Care, Methods and Data, Innovation and Society, Ethics and Well-being. NOVEL will collaborate with companies, universities, patient groups and other health organisations in Finland and abroad.

“This programme will further unify the interdisciplinary and close collaboration between the faculties at UEF. The programme is also a natural continuum to the currently ongoing Horizon2020 MSCA COFUND doctoral training programme Neuro-Innovation,“ Malm says.

“Through its intensive cross-sectoral collaboration in the Kuopio region and beyond, the NOVEL programme will significantly boost the health innovation ecosystem, both locally and nationally,” Eriksson adds.

The multidisciplinary Neuroscience Research Community (NEURO RC) at the University of Eastern Finland aims to understand the disease-specific and common molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy, and to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic approaches for their prevention and cure. Comprising 20 research groups, NEURO RC integrates biological neurosciences with data sciences, neuro-innovations, and neuro-ethics. Learn more and connect with NEURO RC:
