The University of Eastern Finland awarded Professor Tarja Malm for promoting equality in her research group.
Professor Tarja Malm from the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences received the UEF Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities Award for the promotion of gender equality and equal opportunities in her research group.
On the recommendation of UEF’s Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities Committee, Rector Jukka Mönkkönen presented the award at the UEF Equality Day on 19 March 2024.
Tarja Malm, the leader of the Neuroinflammation research group, has promoted gender equality and fairness in her research group in a distinguished manner. According to the committee, Professor Malm has a unique ability to identify and recruit talented researchers based on their research merits and skills, regardless of age, gender, nationality or conviction.
“Tarja Malm has developed her research group boldly and without prejudice. This is demonstrated by the said research group, which is international and includes an equal share of women and men at different career stages. Professor Malm’s management style is open and promotes cooperation. In her research group, everyone receives equal support, can be themselves, and is able to flourish and grow supported in areas that are most natural for them,” the committee states.
