This year, the University of Eastern Finland will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The anniversary celebration will take place on Thursday, 20 February, in the Great Lecture Hall (SN100) on the Kuopio Campus, starting at 12 noon.
The event will be opened by Rector Jukka Mönkkönen, followed by a speech by Petteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The anniversary celebration will also witness the launch of a book about the history of the University of Eastern Finland. Authored by Senior Researcher Mikko Kohvakka and Senior University Lecturer Arto Nevala, the book is entitled Itä-Suomen yliopisto – Reformi ja sen tekijät (University of Eastern Finland - Reform and its makers). The book will be introduced by the chair of the history committee, Professor and Rector Emeritus Matti Uusitupa, and by Senior Researcher Mikko Kohvakka.
In the anniversary celebration, the university will also present awards to accomplished young researchers and excellent teaching practitioners. The event will start with music performed by pupils of class 4A from Kalevala school, conducted by Teacher Aino Liimatainen. Music will also be performed by the University of also Eastern Finland Choir Joy, conducted by Mari-Annika Heikkilä. Coffee will be served at the end of the event.
The anniversary celebration will also be streamed live on 20 February at 12–13.30.
In the evening, an event for invited guests will be organised at the Kuopio Music Centre, featuring, among other things, greetings from representatives of the campus cities. The university’s research will be showcased by snapshots of science, and the guests will also have the opportunity to learn about the university’s jubilee year campaign to conserve swamps.
