University of Eastern Finland continues to fare well in THE Impact Ranking

The University of Eastern Finland is particularly successful in climate action, the latest THE Impact Ranking shows.

The University of Eastern Finland improved its performance in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2024, which is an international ranking focusing on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. This year, the university was ranked 6th best in the world for its contributions to climate action, which marks a climb from last year, when the university was ranked 22nd. More than 2,000 higher education institutions took part in the ranking.

A good ranking result was also achieved in the SDG for Life on Land, which pertains to land use and biodiversity. This was the first time the University of Eastern Finland was assessed in terms of its contributions to this SDG and was immediately ranked as the best in Finland and 70th globally. Similarly, in the SDG for Good Health and Well-being, the University of Eastern Finland was ranked as the best higher education institution in Finland.

“The ranking results indicate that the University of Eastern Finland conducts impactful climate and environmental research, and the university has also invested in education in these fields. The practices adopted by the university also play an important role in the ranking. Considering how tough the competition is, it really is an incredible achievement to rise to the top in this ranking,” says the University of Eastern Finland’s Sustainable Development Specialist Maiju Eskelinen.

The THE Impact Ranking is an international ranking assessing how successful higher education institutions are in promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. There are a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and each higher education institution is scored on the basis of four SDGs. In addition to the SDG Partnership for the Goals, three best-ranked SDGs are taken into account.

In the overall ranking, the University of Eastern Finland ranked third best among Finnish universities. LUT University was the best out of Finnish universities, while the University of Helsinki was ranked second best.
