The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) has improved its ranking in climate action among the world’s universities in the Impact Rankings 2021 by Times Higher Education (THE). The ranking results were published 21 April.
THE’s Impact Rankings assess universities’ ecological, social and economic impact against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). THE’s 2021 Impact Rankings is the third edition and the overall ranking includes 1,115 universities from 94 countries or regions. In the individual SDGs, the UEF was ranked 51st in climate action. In 2020 the UEF ranking in climate action was 68th.
In the overall the UEF was ranked in range 301-400, and the ranking dropped from last year. However, the result can be considered good, as the number of universities participating THE’s Impact Rankings has increased significantly from the previous year. Among Finnish universities, the UEF was ranked as third. Aalto University and LUT University were ranked in higher range 201-300.
In addition to climate action, the UEF improved its scores in the SDGs related to responsible consumption and gender equality.
“Improvement of our scores in the SDGs related to climate action, responsible consumption and gender equality tells us about the relevance of our university’s strategic acts. Success in the rankings promotes our university’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by the end of 2025 and our work for sustainable development and responsibility”, says Soili Makkonen, Director of Planning and Development at the UEF.
