Clinical studies offered by the University of Eastern Finland enable the use of the university’s state-of-the-art expertise in health promotion. Gene diagnostics and the services of the Biomarker Laboratory enable the early identification, monitoring and treatment planning of diseases, which can improve patients’ prognosis and quality of life.
Metabolomics studies body metabolites, providing information on disease mechanisms and possible treatments. Bone histomorphometry and bone density and body composition measurements assess, among other things, the structure and function of bone, which is important in the diagnostics, treatment and risk assessment of osteoporosis and other bone diseases. Clinical trials on brain diseases focus on the development and testing of new treatments and devices, improving brain disease treatment and patients’ quality of life.
Our services include:
- Alzheimer's Disease markers (diagnostic amyloid beta and tau markers of the cerebrospinal fluid)
- Plasma Neurofilament (diagnostic non-invasive marker of nerve damage)
- Commissioned Studies: a versatile selection of markers for brain disease. Measurements are carried out with immunoanalysers Roche cobas (ECLIA electrochemiluminescence), Quanterix Simoa (ultrasensive digital ELISA), or Fujirebio Lumipulse (CLEIA chemiluminescence immunoassay).

Our services includes the analysis of skeletal metabolism and its disorders using patient bone biopsies. The analysis can be used to determine the status of bone metabolism, the proportion of bone formation and resorption, the microarchitecture of spongy bone and the rate of bone mineralisation. Bone biopsy is indicated if a bone metabolic disease is suspected (e.g. osteomalacia, renal osteodystrophy, accelerated bone resorption) if the patient has spontaneous fractures or fractures from low-energetic trauma, and when investigating severe osteoporosis and its treatment.

The LC-MS Metabolomics Center is a service unit within the Biocentre Kuopio, operating at the School of Pharmacy. The center is additionally integrated into the Finnish Biocentre's infrastructure network. The center offers an extensive array of analytical services utilizing chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques, including method development and validation, result interpretation, and specialist training in analytical chemistry. The analytical methods are based on recent findings and include both untargeted and targeted approaches. Untargeted metabolomics, global metabolite profiling, and lipidomics utilize liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry, while targeted quantitative techniques utilize gas and liquid chromatography with unit resolution mass spectrometers.
