Imaging services can be used to study the properties of different samples at the micro and nano levels and to image biological processes. X-ray tomography, photomicroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are key techniques for imaging tissues, cells, and microscopic structures. They are important tools in medicine, materials science, biology and nanotechnology. Sample manufacturing is an essential part of the process of microscopic examinations, and our expertise includes methods for processing different samples. Imaging techniques, such as spectral imaging and biomedical optical imaging, provide information not only on living organisms, plants and environmental phenomena, but also on tissue anatomy and physiology, and are widely used in research and diagnostics.
We offer measurement and imaging services especially for biological and environmental science applications. The services include spectral imaging, kinetic chlorophyll fluorescence imaging, UV imaging and various fluorescence imaging methods at the wavelengths of visible light and ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

Kuopio Biomedical Imaging Unit (Kuopio-BIU) at A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences, UEF, provides excellent facilities for small animal in vivo MRI and PET imaging as well as for ex vivo MRI microscopy in different areas of basic and applied research. Our facilities include four high-field (7-11.7 T) MRI scanners, a PET system and a SPECT/CT system for small animal imaging. Capabilities for simultaneous PET/MRI will be introduced in 2021.
Our services include design, and performance if needed, of MRI and PET experiments and data analysis, as well as training in the equipment use. Kuopio-BIU is an European level infrastructure (ESFRI) as a part of EuroBiomaging Finnish Biomedical Imaging Node.

We provide reliable spectral imaging services and accurate colour determinations of solid samples. We measure the optical light reflection properties of the samples (reflectance spectrum images) at high resolution in the wavelength ranges of the visible light and near-infrared radiation. Some of our spectral cameras are portable.

Our service includes sample radioscopy, or tomographic imaging and analysis. The data can be used to analyse and visualize the structure of the sample, structural defects, pore sizes and fibre orientation. The method is suitable for analysing, for example, wood, pharmaceutical tablets, bone, stone samples, electronics, welding samples, 3D-printed products and composites.
