Seven people applied for the post of Rector of the University of Eastern Finland by the deadline of 31 January 2024. The Rector will be elected from among five candidates, as two of the candidates do not meet the eligibility criteria.
The applicants are:

- Dean, MD Jussi Pihlajamäki
- Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Ph.D. Abhishek Ranjan
- Dean Ph.D., Lic. Sc. Sari Rissanen
The Board of the University of Eastern Finland will appoint the Rector for the term of office that begins on 1 January 2025 and ends on 31 December 2029. The person to be appointed as the university’s Rector is required to hold a doctoral degree and have the skills and professional competencies needed in the performance of the Rector’s duties, as well as good leadership skills, which have been demonstrated in practice. The Rector will lead the university in accordance with its values and strategy, and will manage the duties assigned to the rector in the Universities Act.
The current terms of office of the Rector and the Academic Rector will end on 31 December 2024. The University of Eastern Finland will reform its rector model by appointing a rector and two vice rectors for the term of office beginning in 2025. The application period for the posts of vice rectors is 2–24 May 2024.
